Full data restore accomplished successfully

It doesn’t happen very often, but it’s good to know that when it’s needed, our offsite backup system delivers the goods.

Last week, one of our clients, Averil, had a complete failure of the hard disk in her home/office computer. From what I hear, it sounds as if the hard disk was on the way out for a couple of weeks (made ‘clonking’ noises every now and then and sometimes wouldn’t open Microsoft Excel).

Anyway, following a power cut in the middle of the afternoon, the computer wouldn’t start at all (‘invalid boot disk’) and despite the best attempts of a couple of Averil’s friends and colleagues to resuscitate it, the hard disk was pronounced to be dead.

Averil took the decision that it was time to buy a new computer rather than replace the hard disk in the old one, she contacted us and said that the new PC would be delivered in two days time, could we have a copy of her backed up data ready at the same time to reload onto the new PC. So we burnt the data onto a DVD and sent it of the same day by courier.

Averil’s work is as a food technologist. She stores databases of nutritional information on her computer, uses Microsoft Outlook for email, and also has a couple of thousand digital photographs. Of all of this, the most critical to replace were the photographs (mostly of here children) which were absolutely irreplaceable.

The backup package stored all the data and photographs from ‘My Documents’ and ‘My Pictures’ . The Outlook data files were also copied from their location on the C: drive, along with the contents of the desktop, which Averil used for work-in-progress.

The happy ending to this story is that as soon as a the new computer was set up and Microsoft Office loaded, all the data was copied back to its original locations and Averil was able to continue her work as if nothing untoward at all had happened.

Moral of the story – back up your data!
